Choosing the Right Hydraulic Oil for Your Equipment
Selecting the correct hydraulic fluid is one of the most critical decisions for equipment longevity. Using the wrong oil can lead to poor performance, overheating, and rapid component wear. This guide breaks down what you need to know before your next fluid change.
Understanding Viscosity Grades (ISO VG)
Viscosity is the measure of a fluid's resistance to flow. It's the most important property of hydraulic oil. If the oil is too thick (high viscosity), it causes cavitation and sluggish operation. If it's too thin (low viscosity), it fails to lubricate properly, leading to metal-to-metal contact. Always match the ISO VG rating (e.g., 32, 46, 68) to your equipment manufacturer's specifications and operating temperature range.
Additives: Anti-Wear vs. Rust & Oxidation
Not all hydraulic oils are created equal. Anti-Wear (AW) oils contain zinc and phosphorus to protect high-pressure pumps and motors. Rust & Oxidation (R&O) oils are designed for lower-pressure systems where corrosion protection is the main concern. Using an R&O oil in a high-pressure system can be disastrous.
OEM Recommendations Matter
Manufacturer recommendations aren't just suggestions; they are engineering requirements. Modern hydraulic systems have tight tolerances and specific material compatibilities. Always consult your manual before switching brands or types of fluid. When in doubt, consult with a hydraulic specialist.
